    Based on the traditional principle of two-line voltage synthesis, a modulation strategy is proposed to improve the output performance of matrix converter by changing the switching mode. According to the switching mode of the new strategy, under the premise that the input current and output voltage are sinusoidal, the modulation time of each switch of the matrix converter in one cycle is derived from the relationship between input and output current and voltage. Under the same conditions, the proposed modulation strategy is compared with the traditional two-line voltage synthesis strategy, and the corresponding simulation data and some experimental waveforms are given. Based on the research of MATLAB software simulation, the control strategy of the dSPACE hardware real-time simulation platform is experimentally studied. The simulation and experimental results verify the correctness of the modulation strategy.

    The grid voltage modulated direct power control (GVM-DPC) for grid-connected voltage source inverters has been introduced so that it can overcome the poor steady-state performance of the DPC. However, it was designed for a non-distorted grid voltage. In this paper, the GVM-DPC is modified to overcome a distorted grid voltage(e.g., fifth and seventh harmonics). First, a band pass filter is applied to extract the fundamental component of the voltage so as to build a model for the implementation of the GVM-DPC method. Next, a sliding mode control(SMC) is designed to handlethe terms of the harmonic in order to minimize the total harmonic distortion(THD) of the output currents. Simulations and experimental results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed SMC with GVM-DPC control strategy. It is shown that although the performance of real and reactive powers are sacrificed, the THD of the current is significantly reduced.

    The paper presents an extensive comparison between two pulse width modulation(PWM) control schemes, namely carrier-based and space vector based PWM for a seven-phase voltage source inverter. Sinusoidal carrier-based PWM and space vector PWM techniques are employed to control multiphase power converters supplying variable speed multiphase motor drive systems. Implicit relationships that exist between the two PWM techniques are comprehensively explored; this paper, reveal the underlying relationship between the two PWM techniques in terms of several parameters such as modulating signals and space voltage vectors, modulating signals and space voltage vector sectors, switching pattern of space vector and type of carrier. Furthermore, sharing of zero vectors among different chosen space vectors is elaborated that leads to the formulation of different types of modulation. Digital implementation of the two modulation schemes is elaborated. Simulation results are validated using experimental investigation.

    In this paper, an improved control scheme is proposed to improve the voltage quality of sensitive loads using dynamic voltage restorer. The existing control strategies either put emphasis on the optimal control during steady operation stage of compensation or correct the phase angle jump in the initial stage of compensation. In current researches, the impact of phase jump characteristic of voltage sag on the load side after voltage sag recoveries is widely ignored, further, there are still drawbacks in existing energy self-recovery strategies of DVR. Therefore, to improve the overall voltage compensation time while correcting the phase jump and accelerate the energy recovery of dc link side, this paper aims to 1) Propose the strategies to minimum active power consumption during voltage compensation stage and maximum active power absorption during energy self-recovery stage. 2) Deliver smooth transition in dynamic process to ensure the flexible switching between two stages. Theoretical analysis of proposed strategy is been validated through simulation and experimental results.

    The auxiliary submodule power supply is a vital component of a modular multilevel converter submodule or any multi-submodule converter. Considering the high isolation requirements and difficulties to provide power from the ground potential, the auxiliary submodule power supply must be simple, work reliably and not compromise the submodule’s reliability. A flyback supply from the submodule’s dc link with multiple sets of isolated secondary windings solves at once the low-voltage generation and the required voltage isolation for semiconductor gate circuits and protection without need for an externally supplied low-voltage input to the submodule(high-isolation connection). This paper presents an isolated, flyback-based auxiliary submodule power supply with planar magnetic, printed circuit board integrated windings and multiple isolated outputs for a medium voltage modular multilevel converter as well as detailed electrical and magnetic mathematical modelling, technological integration challenges description and proper experimental test considerations.

    For the identification of series resonance in power system branches, the identification method of branch series resonance based on port equivalent method is proposed. First of all, a typical three-bus test system is used to analyze the series resonance of the branch. It is found that the branch series resonance can be identified by the port equivalent admittance formed between the bus node and the reference node. Then, by establishing the node port association matrix and using the node impedance matrix, the multi-port Thevenin equivalent impedance matrix is obtained, in other words, the equivalent admittance matrix of the port is formed, and the load branch of the node is eliminated, as well as the effect of the node load branch on the series resonance of the identification branch is eliminated. The algorithm effectively utilizes the node admittance matrix commonly used in power system. Finally, the feasibility and correctness of the three-bus system and IEEE9 network system are proved by simulation analysis. The validity of this novel formulation is confirmed through theoretical analysis and case studies.

    Quasi two-level operation of voltage source converters, intended to operate either within high/medium voltage DC networks or low output frequency applications, has caught the attention of both academia and industry. Sequential insertion of the so-called submodules(cells) into the circuit alleviates potential problems related to high voltage slopes(dv/dt), whereas the ease of stacking them together provides the means for satisfactory performance in terms of voltage scalability. Although resembling the modular multilevel converter, quasi two-level converter operates in a different manner, leading to the completely different sizing, ope-rating and balancing principles. So far, no publication has analyzed the transition process occurring within the quasi two-level converter leg, which can be considered crucial from the cell capacitance sizing perspective. Therefore, this paper provides thorough and generalized mathematical description of converter leg dynamics during the voltage transition process. Comprehensive method giving the possibility for cell capacitance determination is presented. With the aim of validating the conducted analysis, simulation results covering the operation of a few different topologies, with varying number of cells, are presented.
