Lateral misalignment (LTM) is one of the serious problems to be solved for the electric vehicle wireless power transfer (EV-WPT). This paper proposed a novel coupler with a triple D coil connected to a Q coil (TDQ) for improving LTM tolerance. The magnetic field of the two primary series-connected triple D and Q coils will be superimposed. This leads to a relatively uniformed magnetic field along the lateral direction for delivering power to the pickup coil in the systems. The proposed approach chooses a double-sided LCC compensation as an example to verify the feasibility of proposed TDQ. A mathematical model is developed to analyze the output power of the system. Based on the analysis, a finite element analysis (FEA) tool ANSYS MAXWELL is used to investigate the proposed magnetic coupler. A prototype at a power level of 6.6 kW is simulated. The maximum misalignment is 225 mm, which is 62.5% of the pickup coil size.
