Wireless power transfer (WPT) for electric vehicles (EVs) has numerous advantages over traditional plug-in systems. If the anti-misalignment performance of the system is insufficient, it is hard to fulfill the required functions. Among x-y-z three directions, the lateral direction requires the highest misalignment tolerance. This paper proposes a reconfigurable topology which can be switched to three topologies with a three-bridge inverter. The transmitting pad consists of two coils which are arranged in the double-D form, with some overlaps. When the receiving coil is on top of the middle position of the transmitting pad, both two transmitting coils are energized; while at the positions with large misalignments, only one of the transmitting coils is energized for power transfer. Simulation results reveal that not only output power can be smoothed within a large lateral misalignment range, but also high efficiency can be guaranteed at weak-coupling positions.
