As a kind of clean energy, solar energy is utilized for electricity generation and also has the potential to improve the endurance of autonomous mobile platforms, such as autonomous electric vehicles and robots. This paper mainly focuses on pursuing a better integration of solar cells and on-road autonomous mobile platforms. On the one hand, we observed the non-negligible power consumption caused by the computing devices and sensors of autonomous mobile platforms; on the other hand, in an on-road operation environment, the spatial distribution of irradiance will be primarily affected by the surrounding buildings or trees along the road, and the motion of the platforms will lead to a more rapid change of the received solar power. Thus, based on these two observations, we reviewed the related works about computing and sensor systems of autonomous mobile platforms, maximum power tracking (MPT) technologies, and platforms’ intelligent abilities facilitating solar energy collection, discussing potential strategies for better integration with autonomous mobile platforms.
